In the 1976 film Network, a reporter laments the power given over to the television: âThis tube is the most awesomeâ¦propaganda force in the wholeâ¦world, and woe is us if it ever falls into the hands of the wrong people.â Go ahead and pat yourself on the back if youâve never been fooled by something on TV.
WHEN POLITICIANS CIRCUMVENT THE MEDIA
The media provide Americans with a picture of politicians and their beliefs, although this viewpoint may change depending on the organizationâs agenda. Some politicians choose to avoid media bias entirely and reach voters directly. President Roosevelt used the radio to broadcast over 30 âfireside chatsâ: radio conversations with the American people. In these addresses, he discussed his New Deal programs. In todayâs political landscape, most government officials have access to official social media accounts, which they can use to quickly react to or get ahead of the news. Elected officials can also directly reach out to voters through televised addresses, books, and editorials in major news outlets.
ASK YOURSELFâ¦
In the relationship between the mass media and politicians, who is the most powerful partner?
